A 3 day event hosted by the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG) to look critically at our food system – present and future – with a focus on equity, justice, community and sustainability.

Amid a growing awareness of the importance of healthy food and sustainable food systems, join community leaders, students, activists and others for lively discussion and powerful visioning where we will explore the barriers and opportunities to making good food equal and accessible to all.

We will:
- explore the relationship between food, culture and identify
- identify structural inequalities in our food system that create barriers to growing, producing, accessing and eating healthy, safe and culturally appropriate food
- connect food justice and reproductive justice
- examine racism in the food system and build awareness and tools for creating change
- and more!

Who should come? Anyone interested in food sovereignty: community members, activists, farmers, students, policy-makers, community organizers

“Structural Barriers to Food Justice – Challenges and Opportunities to Creating a Just Food System” with Anan Lololi of Afri-Can Food Basket, Sunday Harrison of Green Thumbs Growing Children and Prof. Janet Mclaughlin and Fanis Juma Radstake from KW’s African Community Wellness Initiative.

8:00pm -  An evening of spoken work and open mic! At the Little Bean Coffee Bar in Kitchener- admission is free

SUNDAY, March 20

10:00am-12:00pm  – Workshop:

“Youth Activism and Food Justice” with Jessica Yee of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network. This interactive workshop will help put your knowledge and critical analysis to work, while unpacking some difficult questions:
What does it mean to decolonize the food system?
How do we make the connections between food and reproductive justice in our daily lives and in our communities?
How do we work towards an anti-racism food system?

12:00 – 1:00 – Lunch and Closing Ceremony with Christine Lefebvre :

Come and see arpilleras (see below) created by women in our community. Here, women’s voices come together to share stories about food and the connections to their bodies.

Arpillera- a folkloric, community art practice from Chile that brings healing, personal expression and community-based art creation to Canada. Using rudimentary sewing skills and mixing different media, the participants create work of art that reflects their experiences and touches on themes from domestic abuse, freedom, sexual abuse, immigration, family and many others. The result is a moving narrative collage – a tapestry of one’s life.
