POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES

In conjunction with the Good News seminars, a radio show was started by two WPIRG board members, called Positive Perspectives, covering good news and hopeful changes in the community. Aired weekly on the campus radio station, the 15 minute program drew on projects happening in Kitchener-Waterloo and beyond.

1997
COMMUNITY RADIO HAVANA CUBA

Endorsed by many community and student groups and co-sponsored by the UW Womyns Centre, Imprint, and WPIRG, this May 1997 benefit concert gathered Canadian Hip Hop artists to perform in Kitchener to support Radio Havana Cuba International.

“Founded in 1961 by Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, Radio Havana Cuba International has reported on the atrocities of genocide, torture, kidnapping, disappearance, exile and persecution perpetrated throughout Latin America over the past three decades.”

Performers included Project 9, La Bomba, MC Spice, MC Lushcious, Women Ah Run Tings Crew, Shafiq, and Rapscallion.

 

1990-94
THE ELECTRIC GREEN RADIO SHOW

Formed by a WPIRG workgroup, this radio show provided a platform on which students and community members could participate in both producing and consuming radio media in an accessible manner. The Electric Green Radio Show aired weekly between 1990 and 1994.

“[The Electric Green radio show] was formed to produce shows dealing with environmental and social justice issues. This workgroup provides people technical and hands-on experience working within the radio media. The emphasis of the radio shows is to disseminate a message in a creative and motivating manner.”

WPIRG RADIO / RADIO PIRG

An independent student-led radio program produced by WPIRG on a periodic basis between 1990 and 2003.

“Join us for this half hour show dedicated to exploring environmental and social justice issues locally and internationally.”
