Our History
WRRC was formed during the Fall of 2010 to help address concerns expressed by some members of the Rainbow Community about the lack of advocacy and unity among the Rainbow Community in Waterloo Region. The Rainbow Community is defined as “those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirit, intersex, queer, questioning, fluid, unlabelled, asexual, straight allies, and all other members of our community who are interested in increasing awareness and inclusivity of gender and sexual diversity”.
Throughout October and November 2010, WRRC held a series of three “community conversations” to gather the Rainbow Community and its allies together to begin working towards building a unified Rainbow Community in Waterloo Region. The intention of these conversations was to create collaborative community-building opportunities to identify issues and needs the Rainbow Community and its’ allies have. Each of the three conversations revealed new ideas and possibilities which were identified through a SWOT analysis, and turned into four working groups to start creating positive change for the Rainbow Community. The four working groups are: a coalition, education and awareness, a physical space and a website group.
