Amnesty International
Officially affiliated with the worldwide Amnesty International (AI) human rights organization with the following mandate: the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience; fair and prompt trials for political prisoners; the abolishment of the death penalty, torture, and other cruel treatment of prisoners; and the end of political killings and disappearances. This group regularly receives information from AI on latest actions, urgent cases of prisoners, and information on AI’s annual campaign. The group also sets up information displays and invites guest speakers to spread awareness about various human rights issues.
Defence of human rights worldwide is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. AI is independent of any government, political persuasion, or religious creed. They have a specific mandate that they follow when deciding what qualifies as a violation of human rights.
Most of Amnesty International’s work is done through letter writing. Letters have proven to be an effective way to put pressure on governments to respect their citizens’ rights. Volunteers from all around the globe write letters to foreign governments on cases that are carefully researched by Amnesty International. Contributing to the protection of human rights is as easy as picking up a pen and a sheet of paper.
